Sarah Garter

September 15, 1970 – February 21, 2025

Sarah Garter, 54, of Eagle Butte passed away Friday, February 21, 2025, at Monument Health, Rapid City.

Funeral services were held on March 10, 2025, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte. Burial followed in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Sarah was born on September 15, 1970 in Eagle Butte to Joseph Lyle Garter and Lavinia Margaret Eagle Chasing. She grew up in Bear Creek, and received her GED certificate from O.L.C. Community College. For a year, she participated in the Mormon Placement Program, continuing her education in Idaho. In 1978, her family moved to Albuquerque, NM, before eventually returning to Eagle Butte.

Sarah dedicated her time to serving her community. She worked as a cook at Eagle Butte’s middle and high schools before transitioning into administrative roles. She later worked in Central Records, served as a secretary for the tribal treasurer, and contributed to the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) program for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

Sarah found joy in cooking, working on puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren.

Sarah is survived by her sons Taten J. Ducheneaux, Taryn P. Ducheneaux and Skyler M. Garter; father Joseph L. Garter; siblings Elizabeth Garter, Maxine Eagle Chasing Flying By, and Marsha Knight-Eagle Chasing; brothers Posey L., Mark D., and Otis M. Garter; Takojas: Danica Miner, Aiden and Leah Ducheneaux, Kadence Garter, and Dominic Curley-Ducheneaux; aunts Wilma Garter-Traversie, Martha Hale, and Pat Red Fox; and uncles Tony and Kermit Garter, Cleo Hale, and Zigmund Hollow Horn.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lavinia M. Eagle Chasing; grandparents Moses and Amy (Counting) Garter, Robert Hale, Margaret Eagle Chasing-Morrison, Mazie In the Woods, and Ellen In The Woods; aunts Irene Red Bear, Maggie Montreal, Flora High Bear, Genevieve Swift Bird, Frieda Fish, Sylvia High Bear, Pauline A. Bad Warrior, Carma Eagle Chasing, Delvinia Morrison, Theresa Kills Crow, Connie Bear Stops, Charmaine Harrison, and Loveleah In The Woods; uncles Richard and Herbert Hale, Larry Hale, Larry In The Woods, Kenneth Rufus Eagle Chasing, Carlin Morrison, and Donny Eagle Chasing; and nephews Joseph Noisy Hawk and Young Eagle Lee.
