Jean Cain

May 13, 1953 – January 7, 2024

Jean Cain, 70, of Mobridge passed away Sunday, January 7, 2024, at her home.

A Celebration of Life Party in honor of Jean was held on May 18, 2024, at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge was in charge of arrangements.

Jean was born May 13, 1953, to Dwight and Leona (Hall) Owen in Lemmon. She attended school in Lemmon, graduating from Lemmon High School with the Class of 1971. Her favorite places to spend time in her youth were at home baking and sewing with her mother and friends or leasuring at her family’s Shadehill Lake cabin and the Hall Ranch.

After high school, Jean attended South Dakota State University in Brookings. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1975. She moved to Maine and Florida working as a nurse, and eventually took a job in Mott, ND to be closer to home. During this time, she connected with her future husband, Rick Cain, and they were married April 29, 1978.

Jean and Rick lived in Aberdeen for several years while Rick finished his bachelor’s degree and Jean continued her nursing career. They then moved to Vermillion where Rick attended law school and Jean worked as a nurse in nearby Yankton.

In 1981, they moved to Mobridge, which they called home ever since. Jean continued to work as a community health nurse in the Mobridge area. Their first son Tony was born in 1983, and they welcomed their second son Max in 1989.

Jean became a member of the United Congregational Church in Mobridge, and spent time volunteering within the church. She also was a member of the PEO organization in Mobridge.

Jean loved staying busy with crafting, and was an avid sewing enthusiast and in her later years found a love for beading. She was very well read and was always listening to a new audio book.

After 20 years working as a nurse Jean decided to go back to school and earned a Master of Science in Nursing degree in 1998. She then became a nursing instructor for Presentation College in Eagle Butte. After many years she went on to work for Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates, ND. After over 40 years dedicated to practicing and teaching nursing, Jean retired in 2019.

Jean became a grandmother in 2010 to Arleigh Cain, whom she loved and spoiled with all of her heart.

She loved keeping close with friends and family, and loved to host gatherings while cooking and baking. Jean genuinely cared for people and was extremely thoughtful, sending cards to friends and family for birthdays to remind them that they are loved. Jean was always welcome to a hot cup of coffee and friendly conversation.

Jean is survived by Rick Cain, her husband of 45 years; sons Tony Cain and Max Cain of Spearfish; granddaughter Arleigh Cain; sister Julie (Don) Schmidt of West Fargo, ND; brothers-in-law, Rollo (Melva) Cain of Prescott, WI, Ron (Kathy) Cain of Billings, MT, and Rodney (Nancy) Cain of Fargo, ND; sistersin- law, Ellen Owen of Bismarck, ND, Crystal Solano of Rapid City, Candice (David) Rook of Aberdeen, and Sheila Cain of Billings, MT.
