Dillon Ducheneaux

Funeral services for Dillon Ducheneaux, 32, of Promise were held January 7, 2025, at the Timber Lake Community Center. Burial was at the Ducheneaux Ranch near Promise, under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge.

Dillon passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024, at IHS in Eagle Butte.

Dillon Dean Ducheneaux TaSunke Luza Han (Fast Horse) was born on July 14, 1992, in Eagle Butte to Mary Jane “Janie” Thompson Ducheneaux and Todd Ducheneaux. Dillon was raised on the Ducheneaux Ranch at Promise. He attended White Horse Head Start and elementary, middle and Jr. High school at Timber Lake. After his freshman year he made the decision to transfer to Mobridge High School where he joined football, wrestling and high school rodeo. Dillon graduated from Mobridge High School in 2010.

After high school he stayed on the ranch for a year, then attended Mitchell Area Technical Institute and joined their collegiate rodeo team and also pursued wind energy and welding. After college, he returned home to continue to ranch with his dad and it was at this time his love and compassion for horses grew stronger.

Dillon had a natural gift to connect to Sunka Wakan as he was a true horse whisperer. Before Dillon could walk, he was on a horse. During his younger years he participated in showdeos, 4-H rodeos and rodeos. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcross, and horsemanship. Dillon spent many years watching and learning from his grandfather, Tony and his dad.

Throughout his life, extended family and friends helped guide and support him in his many adventures. He loved to travel and explore the Midwest.

Dillon had a contagious smile, resilience and determination was evident. He was generous and always put everyone before him. He never expected anything in return. He was a simple humble man as his love and care were genuine. Dillon made family in all four directions. His family only grew larger in time when he was adopted by his Ate’, Jasper Iron Cloud.

As Dillon navigated through life’s challenges, he made a commitment to join The Bigfoot Ride. During his four years he was very eager to help with anything as he had shared his knowledge and ability to take care of the horses and wanted to learn and relate to our ancestors. He was honored and given his Lakota name, TaSunke Luza Han.

Dillon is survived by his mother, Mary Jane “Janie” Ducheneaux; brother Taten Todd Ducheneaux; sisters Hazyn Jane Ducheneaux and Toni (Luke Farlee) Ducheneaux; niece and nephew Jayna and Jasper Farlee; adopted sisters Lachelle Turning Heart and Larissa Iron Cloud; uncles Doug LeCompte and Dugan Thompson; aunts Anne LeCompte, Rhea LeCompte, and Jerri Ellen (Casey) LaPlante, Jacque Thompson, and Patrice (Lyle) Linderman; hunka father, Jasper Iron Cloud.

Dillon is preceded in death by his father Todd Ducheneaux; grandparents Anthony “Tony” and Celestine (Thompson) Ducheneaux, Thomas “Tommy” Thompson and Arlene (Traversie-Fast Horse) Thompson; aunts Nancy Totton and Michelle LeCompte; and cousins Stephan LeCompte and Josef LeCompte.
