Dawn Muir

Memorial service for Dawn E. Muir, 64, of Mandan, ND, formerly of Eagle Butte, will be held at 1:00 p.m. MT, Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the Bingo Hall in Eagle Butte. Dawn passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.

Dawn was born to David and Mary Estelle (Fielder) Muir on September 19, 1961, in Palo Alto, CA. She attended grade school in Fallon, NV before moving with her siblings and mother to Eagle Butte. Dawn went to Junior High and High School in Eagle Butte. While in high school Dawn excelled in academics and athletics. She was the homecoming queen of her senior class. In 1979 Dawn graduated from Eagle Butte High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen. At the University of South Dakota School of Law in Vermillion she earned a Jurist Doctorate.

Dawn held a variety of positions throughout the country always taking positions to benefit society, particularly the Native American populace. She was a grant writer, public defender, prosecutor, judge, teacher, and domestic violence shelter manager, to name a few. Dawn had a wicked sense of humor with a smile and laugh that would light up a room. She was fiercely protective of her children and grandchildren and a loyal friend to many in Indian Country. Dawn was a proud member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

Dawn is survived by her son Jack (Deedra) Lawrence of Eagle Butte; daughters Mae (Brian) Giggee of Mandan and Tess Muir of Mandan; brother David (Rachelle) Muir of Fallon, NV, and Merle (Irene) Muir of Las Vegas, NV; sisters Donna Hope Muir of Norfolk, VA and Jamielynn Cavanaugh of Eagle Butte; grandchildren Lily, Dominick, Tayton, Layton, Kemper, Lennix, Shannonlee, Logan, Kayson, Arianna and Priscilla; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
