Dave Doan

August 31, 1946 – October 14, 2024

David “Dave” Eugene Doan, 78, of Isabel, entered heaven’s gates on October 14, 2024, at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Faith, on August 31, 1946, to Clarence and Florence Doan and joined two older siblings at home. Dave grew up on the family homestead in Perkins County north of Faith. When he was four years old the family moved to town so the children could go to school.

Dave attended school at Isabel High School and graduated in 1964. After graduation Dave moved to Denver, CO to attend architect school. After winter break Dave moved back to Isabel, where he resided until his dying days.

Dave enrolled in the Army National Guard in October 1965. He left for basic training in February 1966. During his seven-year term in the service Dave became a Staff Sergeant.

Dave worked in many different roles throughout his life. He worked for a coal mine out west of Glad Valley, worked and drove truck for UPS, drove the bulk truck for Locken’s Oil, owned and operated Dave’s 66 Service, worked for Loren Miller Construction, was employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, and Lindskov Implement and finally, until this past summer, was employed at Premier Equipment, all in Isabel. Even after Dave retired from the state DOT he had to go to work as he had to keep his hands busy. He was known as the parts man and was always on the phone getting something taken care of. When asked if he would ever fully retire, he would answer with “and do what?” So, he continued working until it became too much for his health.

Dave and Mattie Lou (Marshall) met at a bank Christmas party that his bankers, at the time, told him to come to. It only took one dance, and the rest is history for them. It wasn’t long after that first “date” that Dave was knocking on Mattie Lou’s parents’ door and asked her to marry him. They were united in marriage on May 15, 1982. They just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. To this union son Clint Jay was born on February 7, 1985, and Shanna Kay on November 19, 1987.

Dave had a passion for woodworking and was always busy in his workshop building something. In the past few years, he built countless wood toy barns with a corral set for each. Many boys and girls have these very special barns. He built his daughter a very special Barbie doll house when she was younger that took up a good portion of their living room. Dave could build anything if you asked him and would work away with the building plans drawn up in his mind.

Along with woodworking he had a passion for fishing. In his later years you could find him driving his side-by-side out to Isabel Lake to just throw a few casts in the water. BUT he was an avid “catch and release” guy so he would never bring home the fish to cook up.

Dave liked to have his workshop open for his card buddies most afternoons.

Dave is survived by his son Clint Doan (fiancée Amy Taylor) of Isabel, daughter Shanna Miller (Wade) of Gillette, WY; grandsons Chevy and Casin Miller, of Gillette; brothers Clyde Doan, Douglas Doan (Heather), and Clayton Doan (Kathy); sisters Linda Watzel (Gary), Wendy Red Bear and Edith Grefsrud (Wayne); brothers-in-law Del Marshall (Andree), Kip Marshall (Jamie) and Tipton Marshall (Connie); sisters-in-law Kitty Lutz (Dave), Melody Marshall and Cindy Marshall (Lester); aunt Donna Bertsch; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
