A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2026 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel in Sioux City. A grave side service will be at 10:00 a.m. MT Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Hillview Cemetery in Isabel Charlotte was born December 31, 1928 to Fred and Gail (Crank) Carter in Isabel. When she was a young girl the family moved to Firesteel. Charlotte and her sister Sarah attended grade school in Firesteel but had to travel to Isabel for high school, where they lived at a boarding house with five other girls during the school week. They would eagerly look forward to Friday when they would be excused early to catch the train called the Galloping Goose back to Firesteel for the weekend. Charlotte very much enjoyed living in Firesteel where she said everyone was friends and like one big family.
After high school Charlotte enrolled in Stewart’s School of Hair Styling in Aberdeen.
Following graduation, she worked as a licensed beautician at Sarah’s Beauty Salon, which was owned by her sister. Sarah Lofgren, in Isabel. After many years the solutions and hair spray started to irritate her hands and bother her throat. She then accepted employment with the Dewey County Bank Isabel branch where she worked for many years before becoming employed in the Dewey County Director of Equalization’s office in Timber Lake. She worked there until retiring and moving to Sioux City, IA with her sister Sarah and Sarah’s husband Myron.
It wasn’t long after moving to Sioux City before Charlotte decided she wasn’t quite ready for retirement and began working part-time at Midwest Alarm Company and Shopko. Charlotte enjoyed her interactions with the customers at Shopko; the opportunity to visit with them reminded her of her early years working at Elfrink’s Grocery Store in Isabel, where she was a favorite with the kids who visited the store.
Charlotte was very active in the Isabel community and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
Charlotte also loved music and was the piano player in the Dakota Travelers dance band along with her brother Lloyd who played the trumpet, her father Fred on the drums, and Alvin Burke on the saxophone.
Charlotte is survived by her nieces, Marva McMillen of Sioux Falls and Maxine (Brock) Hutchinson of Dakota Dunes; nephews Marlon (Laurie) Lofgren of Omaha, NE and Marty (Kathy) Lofgren of Edmond, OK; and many great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gail Carter; brother Lloyd Carter; and sisterin- law Lorraine Carter; sisters Freida Carter and Sarah Lofgren; brother-in-law Myron Lofgren; and nephew-in-law Larry McMillen.
Charlotte’s family appreciated the Holy Spirit Retirement Home staff and Rhonda’s Senior Support Services for their compassionate care. Charlotte enjoyed her visits with Rhonda, especially the car rides around Sioux City or to Dairy Queen for ice cream.
