Arlene Cooper Martin

April 4, 1933 – November 11, 2024

Arlene Martin, 91, of Dupree passed away at her home on Monday, November 11, 2024 in Dupree.

Celebration of Arlene’s life was held November 19, 2024 at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree. Burial was at the Opal Cemetery.

Arlene Freda Cooper was born on April 4, 1933 in Edson, SD to Allen A. and Emma (Kenstler) Cooper.

She married Arthur R. Martin in Pierre on August 5, 1952. They had David in September of 1953 and Diane in May of 1957.

Arlene held the office of Mayor and council person for 29 years for the town of Dupree. She enjoyed every meeting.

Arlene had a mail route from Dupree to Cherry Creek, with patrons along the way, for 50 years. This was her joyful time. She was an honorary member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. Her name was “People Wait for Woman.”

She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Bruce) Humble of Faith, daughter-in-law Rhonda (Wes Escott) Martin of Faith; grandchildren Blaine Humble of Faith, Jeremiah Martin of Mason, NC, Melitta (Ron) Bonnet of Whitewood, and Alyssa (Wade) Kopren of Bison; great-grandson Landon Schultes of Faith; honorary granddaughters Kaitlyn Dupris, Bailee Birkeland, and Liberty Schultes; many relatives, friends, and neighbors; and a special person, Dwight Gubberd.

She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur; son David; her parents; brothers John, Ted, and Art; sister Dorothy; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A memorial has been established to the Dupree Fire Department.
