Aaron Turning Heart

August 13, 1968 – August 30, 2024

Aaron “Sonnee” LaRue Turning Heart II aka (Lil Was’na) Hoksila Wambli (Eagle Boy), 56, of Eagle Butte, was born to Aaron Sr. and Gladys (Dog Eagle) Turning Heart on August 13, 1968.

Sonnee grew up in the Bear Creek Community, also stayed with his grandparents Dennis and Rosalie (Counting) Dog Eagle who helped raise him. When they died his big brother Jeff Turning Heart and aunt Mona Hill raised him. He loved to stay at his grandparents’ and later in life he moved to Eagle Butte.

Sonnee attended school at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and graduated in 1987. He was on the National Honor Society. While in school, he played basketball and joined track and cross country. Sonnee and his brothers were known as “The Turning Heart Boys.” All the brothers were unbeatable.

In 1994, Aaron started working for the Walter Miner Law Enforcement Center. He was the lead detention officer and received the “Employee of the Year” award in 2004.

Sonnee loved to spend time with family and friends. He was the rock of the family, he always made sure his family had everything. He loved to cook, hunt and visit his buddies.

On January 26, 2001, he married Jessica LeBeau; they welcomed daughters, Jaymalee Lynsey and son, Jordan Brooklyn along with their sisters, Jamalia, Mindy, and brother, Eric.

In 2011, they welcomed their baby boy, Aiden Aaron and in 2017, they welcomed their baby girl Skye Rhayne to their family.

Sonnee leaves behind his wife Jessica; daughters Jaymalee, Skye, Jamalia, and Mindy; sons Jordan, Aiden and Eric; brothers Jeff (Julie) Turning Heart, D’Aun Turning Heart and Jason Turning Heart; sister Arlys (Dale) Bagola; grandchildren Raquel, Octavian, Xander, Aubree, Graylon, Kai’len and Nevyn Mendoza; nieces Kayla, Shai, Traci, Sunni, Baby Erin (goddaughter), Abby and Erin LaBeau.

He is preceded in death by his parents Aaron, Sr. and Gladys Turning Heart; grandparents Dennis and Rosalie Dog Eagle; brother Juan Turning Heart; sisters Sherri Turning Heart, Rosa Cook, and Lucy One Feather; and nephews Brent, Chunky, Brandon Bagola and Stuart Turning Heart.
