Funeral services for Susan Diane Rice, 68, of rural Mobridge were held May 27, 2026 at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge. Burial was at the Rice Family Cemetery.
Susan passed away Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Susan was born on January 23, 1958 in Yakima, WA to Donald and Barbara Nelson.
She attended Queets School in Washington State until the 8th grade, then graduated from Lake Quinault High School in Washington State in 1976.
In the spring of 1979, Susan met Clayton Rice and moved to South Dakota, where they married on October 13, 1979. They were blessed with 47 years, three kids, ten grandkids, one great–grandchild and one more on the way.
Susan spent her life working the family ranch that she and Clayton built. Along the way, She also worked several years at the Wakpala School, Little Eagle Grant School and the McLaughlin School as a cook. She was predominantly a wife, mother, grandmother and friend her whole life.
Susan was grateful for her dear friends, Sweenie Mowrer and Mary Jane Anderson, who stood by her side with love, friendship and support through life’s challenges. She was blessed with many wonderful friendships throughout her life.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, David Nelson.
She is survived by her husband Clayton Rice; children, Becky (Travis) Swezey, Lesli (B.J.) Blom, Daniel Rice (Erica Laundreaux); grandkids Brendon, Rehana, Parker, Brayden, Averi, Cody, Rayden, SkyeAnn, ToriEllen, Esmae, and Darryn; greatgranddaughter Wrenley; and sisters Lorri Nelson and Janice Brockavich.
