Lorraine Gouldin

July 20, 1929 – September 26, 2025

Funeral services for Lorraine Gouldin, 96, of Spearfish were held October 3, 2025 at the United Parish Church in Timber Lake.

Lorraine Scott was born July 20, 1929 to Harry and Pearl (Glerup) Scott in Corson County. Lorraine had no middle name. The family had chosen Lucille Lorraine for a girl’s name so when twins were born, she and her sister shared the name. Lorraine grew up on her parents’ cattle ranch, The Bullhead Ranching Company, on Rock Creek near Bullhead. Lorraine attended the Jackson School near their ranch and later attended school in Walker and graduated from McLaughlin High School in 1948.

In 1951 Lorraine’s uncle Dexter Glerup announced he was moving to Burns, OR and invited Lorraine to move there with him as Burns was a booming community with plenty of employment opportunities. In 1952 Lorraine became employed at the Harney County Hospital in Burns and made it her career, working in Central Supply for 32 years. She retired in 1983.

In 1964 Lorraine and Harry Gouldin, a Burns police officer, were married. They made their home in Burns and Lorraine made her yard into one of the most beautiful and well-maintained in the neighborhood. Lorraine and Harry traveled the Pacific Northwest and Lorraine always accompanied Harry on his annual hunting trips.

Harry passed away in 1977. After his death Lorraine continued living in Burns until 1991, when she moved to Timber Lake to be closer to family.

Lorraine never did drive a car and always walked to work and the grocery store and almost anywhere else she needed to go. She was seen almost daily at the Timber Lake Post Office picking up mail for herself and neighbors. She resided in the Timber Lake Manor and always kept busy helping neighbors, shoveling snow around the Manor, and keeping the grass watered. She also volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center with whatever needed accomplished.

Lorraine was a very quiet individual, but always enjoyed sitting among a group of people listening to the conversations. She read the daily papers, watched a lot of national news on TV and was always up to date on current events and national news. If someone reported current events incorrectly, she always spoke up to correct them and then joined in on the conversations.

Lorraine loved to travel and if asked to come along on a trip, whether it was to Mobridge, Bismarck, or across the country, she never hesitated and was always ready to go. In 2016 Lorraine was unable to live alone and became a resident of the Golden Living Center in Mobridge. In December 2018 she transferred to the Spearfish Canyon Health Care in Spearfish.

Lorraine is survived by nieces Joan (James) Luder, Jean (Bill) Veal, Carol (James) Reh, and Elaine (Dennis Neigel); nephews Dillard Enright, Justin (Kendra) Enright, Joe (Peggy) Holzer, Allan Elder, Vernon Scott, Scott Enright, and Leland Scott; and numerous grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Gouldin; parents Harry and Pearl Scott; sisters Isabelle Holzer, Genieve Elder, and twin Lucille Enright; brother Charles Scott; nieces Dianne Scott, Sandra Pearson, Bonnie Boysen, and Darlene Elder; and nephews Dale Scott, and Francis Elder.
