Lucille Florence Lindskov (“Lucy” “Tinky”) was born on December 2, 1940 in Dupree to Bill and Delores (Dougall) Lindskov. She grew up in Isabel and graduated from Isabel High School in 1958. Following her graduation, Lucy attended Northern State College in Aberdeen earning her bachelor’s degree in business and physical education.
Lucy was a pioneer for sports programs, particularly women’s sports in the state of South Dakota for over 35 years. In her early years of teaching in Lemmon, Lead, and Rapid City at Douglas High School, there were few opportunities available to young women regarding sports. Lucy organized several high school athletic associations and competitive teams which gave birth to the notion of young women participating in sports in South Dakota.
Tinky earned her master’s degree at South Dakota State in 1969 and began her career at Whittier Middle School in Sioux Falls where she worked fervently to bring excellence to the school’s physical education and athletic programs. She coached every sport available to girls. After 25 consecutive years of coaching at Whittier, she accepted the position of athletic director in 1989. As athletic director, Lucy worked very hard to see that her school’s sports programs were run efficiently and honorably.
Some of her special honors and recognitions include being executive secretary of the South Dakota Gymnastics Judging Association, the first named to the South Dakota Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame, first woman to be awarded the 25 year coaching award in South Dakota, first NFIOA Official of the Year for South Dakota, recipient of the 25 year judging award as an official in South Dakota, Sioux Falls Coaches Association Distinguished Service Award, Middle School Physical Education Teacher of Year Award in South Dakota, South Dakota Girls and Women’s Sports Leadership Award, National Distinguished Service Award for her work in gymnastics, and Middle School Coach of the Year.
Tinky’s summers were spent at the ranch in Isabel and spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener and loved traveling all over the world. In 2021 she moved to Rapid City to be closer to family. While in Sioux Falls, she belonged to the Crestwood United Church of Christ and Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ.
Lucille is survived by two brothers, Loris (Beverly) Lindskov of Isabel and Les (Marcia) Lindskov of Isabel; nieces and nephews Corey (LuAnn) Lindskov, Bill (LeAnn) Lindskov, Karma (John) Nash, Brent (Angie) Lindskov, Monte (Mindy) Lindskov, Bryce (Tennile) Lindskov, Mark (Jessica) Lindskov, Todd (Marisa) Lindskov; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
