Roland “Darren” Shooter

February 4, 1963 – March 3, 2025

Roland Darren Shooter, 62, of Eagle Butte passed away in a house fire in Eagle Butte on March 3, 2025.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Eagle Butte. Burial followed in the Green Grass Cemetery.

Darren was born on February 4, 1963, to Lloyd Janis Shooter and Josephine Chasing Hawk. He went straight to his grandmother Eunice’s home and was raised by both grandma Eunice and his mother, Helen Bernice Shooter/Crow.

Darren attended Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School and graduated from the McCrossan Boys Ranch School near Sioux Falls.

Darren started roaming when he was a teenager. No matter where he went, he would call his mother and tell her what all he had done and seen.

Darren met his wife, Autumn Dion, from Lake Andes. From this marriage he had one son, Roland Shooter Jr. and bonus sons Alex and Josh. Darren had one daughter, Heather Shooter.

Darren wandered around the world after this marriage and met Mary Shot At. She brought out the best in him. She made him work, take care of his grandchildren and his mother. Darren and Mary moved back to Eagle Butte to take care of his mother after she fell and broke her shoulder. After Mary passed away, Darren remained in Eagle Butte spending time with his nephews, sister and mother. Darren would clean his mother’s house, make sure she had food and hot coffee, and he would leave and wander for days. Darren loved his party friends. He was always quick to offer assistance for anyone needing help. If he had one dollar, he would give it to you if you needed it.

Darren loved drawing pictures, creating art and spending time with pretty much anyone. He loved to laugh and joke around. He also was a master chef, creating combinations like omelets and mayonnaise and commodity mash.

Blessed to have shared his life are his sister Eunice Hollow Horn; daughter Heather Shooter; sons Alex and Josh Shooter; nephews Jacob and Joshua Shooter, and Cameron, Marcus Jr., Sylis, Syrus, Mason and Soloman Hollow Horn; nieces Lanice Shooter-Miner and Jennifer Shooter; grandchildren Dorice and Ashton Reynolds and special niece Simone Traversie, whom he loved like a daughter.

Greeting Darren in the Star Nation are his mother Helen Crow; brother Leslie Boyd Shooter; stepdad Lawrence Crow; and son Roland Shooter, Jr.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg was in charge of arrangements.
