Daniel McKinnon

December 8, 1940 – December 25, 2024

Born on December 8, 1940, in Mapleton, ND, Daniel McKinnon was the son of Steve and Hulda McKinnon. He grew up on the family farm in Mapleton, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and a strong connection to the land.

Daniel was a graduate of North Dakota State University (NDSU), where his passion for Bison football began, a love he carried with him throughout his life.

Daniel served in the North Dakota Army National Guard.

On May 28, 1971, Daniel married Marlene, the love of his life. Together, they were blessed with three daughters Lori, Dawn, and Shannon. The family flourished under Daniel’s devoted care, and he cherished the time spent with his girls as they grew up.

Daniel had a long and successful career in the banking industry, working in the Fargo area and retiring from Dewey County Bank in Timber Lake in 2004. His work ethic and commitment to his profession earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.

Following his retirement, Daniel and Marlene moved to Devils Lake, just outside of Perham, MN, where they enjoyed a peaceful life by the lake surrounded by family and friends. They spent winters in Weslaco, TX, where they made countless memories with friends and fellow Winter Texans. He enjoyed trips to the casino, his daily Sudoku puzzles, and watching his favorite westerns.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Marlene McKinnon; his daughters Dawn McKinnon (Chris Johnson) and Shannon Dye (Shawn); his sonin- law Joel Lindgren; his grandchildren Darby Cervenka (RJ), Mckenzie Dye (Braeden Wanzek), Sydney Dye, his great-grandchildren Cal, Lyla and Mara. Daniel is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Hulda McKinnon; his daughter Lori Lindgren; and his sister Barbara Polum.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
