Mattie was born in Mobridge on October 29, 1953, to Lois (Flanagan) and Alfred “Swede” Marshall and joined two older brothers at home. Mattie Lou embraced the values of hard work and devotion to the family from an early age, growing up on her family’s ranch near Timber Lake Mattie Lou attended White Horse School and Glencross School. She graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1971. She worked at Dewey County Bank for many years, at the Isabel Super Valu, was a flagger and a pilot car driver for a few summers, babysat many kids while raising her own two children, cleaned house for a few elderly folks, was the bookkeeper for Isabel Co-op and until the day she passed was the officer manager for CRST DOT. She loved keeping busy and would always wonder what she would do if she ever did retire. She would say she would be too bored.
Mattie Lou and Dave met at a bank Christmas party and the rest is history. They were united in marriage on May 15, 1982. To this union Clint Jay was born on February 7, 1985 then Shanna Kay on November 19, 1987.
Mattie Lou had a passion for her flower garden always making up new gardens, transplanting things in different spots, moving things around, pulling up those dang weeds, and just enjoying being outside in the dirt. Most of her flowers have a story of where she got that seedling or whom she got a clipping from.
Mattie Lou loved the simple pleasures in life and would never pass up the opportunity for an adventure with her best friend or sister. She had a passion for reading and could finish a whole book drinking just her morning coffee.
Mattie Lou was president of the Smith Wright Unit 120 American Legion Auxiliary.
Mattie Lou was confirmed on December 14, 1973, at the First Baptist Church in Timber Lake. She was a committed member of the church and later became a member of the United Church of Christ in Isabel.
