Shirley Ann (Ackerman) Reiss, 82, of Trail City, passed away June 6, 2024 in Bismarck, ND. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on June 14, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery.
Shirley was born April 27, 1942, to John and Martha (Moser) Ackerman in Eureka. She grew up on the family farm north of Pollock. She attended school in Pollock and graduated in 1961.
While working at a restaurant in Mobridge she met Raymond P. Reiss in the spring of 1962. They were married on October 3, 1964 in Mobridge. They made their home in Aberdeen until they purchased the Klein Café in Trail City in October, 1965 and renamed it the Trail Café, which they operated until 1980. During this time they were blessed with 3 children, Kenneth Ray, Luanne Marie, and Michael Ray.
They sold the café and moved the family back to Shirley’s home town of Pollock, where Ray worked as the elevator manager. Shirley enjoyed a variety of jobs while raising her children and attending all of their sport activities, which brought her great joy as she loved to socialize. Shirley had many special talents that included crocheting and making afghans for all of her nieces and nephews when they graduated from high school. She enjoyed sewing, baking, playing cards, putting puzzles together, and spending time with family and friends.
In 2002, they moved back to Trail City where she enjoyed keeping busy until health issues said it was time to retire. In February of 2012, she was blessed with a granddaughter and earned the name “Nana.” She was so proud of Gracie and was sure to let everyone know of all the things that Gracie had accomplished and was involved in.
In December of 2023 she moved to the Edgewood on Dominion in Bismarck. There she was able to enjoy making new friends.
Shirley was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose.
Shirley is survived by her husband Raymond, daughter Luanne (Dan) Schonert of Wilton, ND; son, Michael (special friend Tamara) and granddaughter Gracie Rae Schonert; brothers-in-law: Ralph (JoAnn), Marvin (Joan) and Harvey (Gloria); sister-in-law Arlene (Tom) Wiggins; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
