Kessa Bigger (MIDDLE) was the recipient of the $500 Beau DuBray Memorial Scholarship, presented by Principal Julie Marshall (left) and Native American Education Coordinator Amy Sandquist (right) on behalf of Beau’s family. The award honors a senior who is kind and supportive of others, always the first to offer help, and who is in touch with their Native culture. Kessa was active in the Native American Club for four years and served as its president.

Cole Ducheneaux and Mckenzi Vomacka (middle) received star quilts and $2000 scholarships in memory of Jim O’Leary at the TLHS Awards Day. Making the presentation were Jim’s sister, Laura O’Leary Rose (left), and his widow, Megan Simon O’Leary (right). The award honors a student who demonstrates the character traits of the late Jim O’Leary. There were ten applicants for the two scholarships awarded.

Dewey County hiring new deputies for sheriff and DOE

The Dewey County Commission discussed new employees, the burn ban, gravel bids, and the purchase of a sod mulcher at its regular monthly meeting on May 8.Sheriff Ash Arpan and Deputy Kyle Nilson reported that a new deputy will be joining their department at the end of May, replacing Tristan Sippert.

Timber Lake City ready to pursue renovation of existing water tower

Three members were sworn in at the Timber Lake City Board meeting on May 6. Tom Hermes and Ty Traversie were elected to three-year terms in the April 8 city election and Jess Schlosser was elected to a twoyear term. Traversie replaces Mike LaCompte.

Natalie Biegler of Timber Lake will compete in the 78th Annual Miss South Dakota Scholarship Competition May 29-31 at The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center in Brookings. She is the daughter of Bo and Christa Biegler of Timber Lake and attends the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND.
