Stray Thoughts: Well Wisher

I woke this morning from a bad dream. In my dream, a person was stuck, lodged, upside-down in a long shaft at the bottom of a well and couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know where this dream came from. There was nothing on the news and no one I know has ever been in this situation.

When we introduce our bulls to the herd in June, we always make sure our milk cow, Pumpkin, has a few days head start. Like all good jersey cows, Pumpkin produces far more milk and cream than one calf could ever dream of drinking.

This morning I woke to a flickering, tapping sound. My eyes creaked open to see the pearl-gray of first light seeping beneath the curtains. Everything looked as it should, but my ears still felt confused. Was that sound the scattering flight of birds? No, too rhythmic.

Sometimes I like to make things hard on myself for reasons that are a mystery even to me. Sometimes it is because the outcome seems worth it, like touring with my kids when they were babies. I didn’t want to be away from them, so, even though it was hard, I packed us all up and we hit the road.

Your father is dead as are thousands just like him. Your house is destroyed. Neighborhoods, schools, and churches are all scattered chunks of bloody concrete amid the scorched, pockmarked rubble where your life used to be. Your life was not taken…but wasn’t it?

We’ve once again passed through the darkest part of the year, and I can’t remember it ever feeling quite this good. Though the light has been growing stronger ever since the winter solstice in December, the days are now officially longer than the nights. The growing season has arrived.
