Thoughts while cleaning off my desk

The reason for the title of this column is that every once in a while I clean off my desk and when I do it sort of deserves a headline — in my mind, at least. The special occasion that prompts me to take a few minutes to tidy up my space this week is the completion of West River Summer 2020, the three-part supplement found inside this week’s Topic. WRS is a couple weeks later than usual (blame the pandemic) but we’re happy to have it done and in your hands. We hope readers will find it enjoyable and useful, whether you read it all at once or consume small bits throughout the summer. Share your copy if you like, and if you need more copies, let us know.

Lucky me! I was surprised and happy to hear from so many people last week when I passed my 40-year mark at the Topic. Thank you, everyone, for the balloons, candy, cards, flowers, encouraging words, and Facebook messages. I don’t usually look at Facebook much because of some technical difficulties with my account (operator error?) but it was well-timed that Kasey Maher and Ethan Schaffer featured the Topic in their series on local businesses last week. The feature is sponsored by Timber Lake & Area Development and they highlight a different business every few days. Ethan happened to call and ask me some questions on the very day of my 40th anniversary at the Topic — June 9 (which would also have been my and Jim’s 51st wedding anniversary.) Again, thanks, everyone!
